Yale Dermatologists Warn: Simplicity Key to Skincare Success

Yale dermatologists warn students about overcomplicating skincare routines, as many are influenced by social media to use unnecessary bubble skincare products. They recommend simplicity and consistency, with a focus on daily sunscreen use.

Mridula Bharathi '29, a Yale student, has found success with a simple four-step nighttime routine, discovering products through trial and error. However, dermatologists Sara Perkins and Mary Laird caution against this approach. Perkins advises using a gentle cleanser twice a day, moisturizer, and daily sunscreen, with additional products like retinoids and acne washes only when necessary. Perkins warns that combining products without understanding their interactions can lead to skin problems. Perkins emphasizes the importance of daily sunscreen use, even on cloudy days or when indoors, to protect against sun damage. Laird agrees that complicated routines are often unnecessary and can cause irritation. The global skincare market is projected to reach 194.05 billion US dollars by 2032, reflecting the growing interest in skincare products among students.

Yale dermatologists advise students to keep skincare routines simple and consistent, with daily sunscreen use being the cornerstone. They warn against overcomplicating routines and using products without understanding their effects. By following these guidelines, students can maintain healthy skin without falling prey to unnecessary bubble skincare products or complications.
