Speed Reduction on Frankfurt Street Yields Positive Results

In a significant move towards a cleaner and quieter city, the speed limit on Frankfurt Street in Neu-Isenburg was reduced to 30 mph in November 2022. Following a successful one-year trial, the city council made the decision to make this change permanent on September 18, 2024.

Mayor Dirk Gene Hagelstein, who took office on April 11, 2022, emphasised the positive effects of the speed reduction. He stated that it resulted in less noise, slower cars, and fewer emissions. The test showed clear improvements, as stated in the evaluation published by the city administration.

One of the most notable improvements was a decrease in nitrogen dioxide concentration. Traffic planners recorded a decrease of about 10%, which is equivalent to approximately 2.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air. This reduction is significant, as it contributes to better air quality for the city's residents.

The speed reduction also led to a reduction in daily traffic by about 2,300 vehicles. This decrease in traffic volume was a welcome change for many, as it meant less congestion and faster travel times for those who still needed to use the street.

Noise emissions were reduced by up to 5 decibels as a result of the speed reduction. This decrease in noise levels has made the street a more pleasant place for pedestrians and cyclists, contributing to a better quality of life for the city's residents.

However, there was a slight decrease in the number of cyclists on Frankfurt Street due to the installation of a parallel bike lane. Despite this, the overall increase in safety and quality of life for all users of the street has been a positive outcome of the speed reduction.

It is worth noting that there was an increase in severe accidents, but they were not attributed to the speed limit. The reduction in speed limit on Frankfurt Street resulted in a 31% decrease in accidents compared to the previous year, highlighting the importance of safe and sensible speed limits in promoting road safety.

In conclusion, the speed reduction on Frankfurt Street has been a success story for Neu-Isenburg. The city's residents can look forward to cleaner air, quieter streets, and safer roads, as the speed limit remains at 30 mph.
