Tension is escalating at Tesla's Grünheide factory, where over 3,000 employees have signed a petition appealing for immediate respite from alleged excessive workloads. Initiated by IG Metall union, the petition requests longer breaks, an end to understaffing, and an end to what the union terms as workplace harassment. The petitioners plan to submit their demands to management this week.

IG Metall district leader, Dirk Schulze, highlighted the workers' determination, stating, "Despite mounting pressure, Tesla workers are standing firm. Management needs to take action." The union has earlier accused Tesla of intimidating staff, particularly in relation to sick leave policies—an allegation Tesla dismissed as exaggerated.

While an IG Metall survey conducted in autumn showed that 83 percent of workers often feel overworked, Tesla's counter-survey revealed that 80 percent of employees are content with their job roles. The tech giant also touts employee benefits such as corporate shuttle buses, an on-site gym, and the offering of permanent contracts to 300 temporary workers starting April.

It is significant to note that Tesla's Grünheide plant, also known as Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, is a key facility, primarily producing the Model Y and employing a substantial workforce. With plans to produce up to 500,000 vehicles annually and an aim to increase its workforce to 12,000 people, the factory is expanding its operations[1][4].
