Winchester's .270 WSM: Powerful, Versatile, and Easy to Handload
Winchester introduced the .270 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) in 2002, offering a powerful, versatile cartridge for hunters and shooters. This round, with a 0.277"-diameter bullet, has gained popularity due to its performance and ease of use.
The .270 WSM was designed with a short, wide case, incorporating modern features for enhanced accuracy. It holds more than the .270 Winchester but less than the .270 Weatherby Magnum, with a case capacity between 71.8 and 75.1 grains of water. Handloading is straightforward, with cases available from major manufacturers like Winchester, Federal, Hornady, Nosler, and Norma.
The .270 WSM competes with the Winchester .270 and the Roy Weatherby .270 Wby. Mag. It offers impressive performance, with a 140-grain projectile reaching up to 3,018 f.p.s. in the .270 Winchester and .270 WSM, and 3,293 f.p.s. in the .270 Weatherby Magnum. According to SAAMI, a 130-grain bullet in the .270 WSM attains a muzzle velocity of 3,275 f.p.s., faster than the same bullet in the .270 Winchester and close to the .270 Weatherby Magnum.
The .270 WSM fits into most short actions, which are lighter and more rigid than long or magnum-length actions. It requires propellants with slower burn rates, such as IMR 4350, H4350, Reloder 19 and 22, Ramshot Magnum, Accurate MagPro, and Vihtavu. Bullet selection should consider overall length and compatibility with the rifle's twist rate, with most rifles having a 1:10" twist rate.
The .270 Winchester Short Magnum provides hunters and shooters with a potent, accurate, and versatile option. Its ease of handloading, wide availability of components, and impressive performance make it a popular choice for various hunting and shooting applications.
