Nestlé confirms safety for mineral water consumers - Warning Issued by Nestlé Regarding Mineral Water

In a developing story, French authorities have launched an investigation into Nestlé Waters over allegations of illegal filtration methods used on natural mineral water, particularly at brands such as Vittel, Contrex, Perrier, and Hépar. The probe was initiated after a complaint by the independent food watchdog, Foodwatch, based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The crux of the matter lies in the use of unauthorized treatments, such as microfiltration, activated carbon filters, and ultraviolet filters, on Nestlé's bottled mineral waters. These treatments are not permitted for natural mineral water under French regulations, as they potentially compromise the authenticity of the product.

Foodwatch has labelled the situation a "large-scale fraud", accusing Nestlé of misleading consumers and calling for accountability from both the company and the regulatory authorities. Nestlé has publicly stated that it is cooperating fully with the authorities during the ongoing investigation and has expressed regret over the issue.

The French Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Protection and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) has taken action, conducting a search of Nestlé's offices near Paris. The company has also confirmed that no natural mineral water from French production is sold in Germany.

As the investigation continues, Foodwatch demands that responsibilities within the company and the supervisory authorities be clarified. The case has already drawn significant regulatory scrutiny and public criticism due to the implications for consumer trust and food safety governance in France and potentially Germany.

Nestlé Foods has pledged to take measures under the supervision of the relevant authorities to ensure that production conditions comply with the applicable regulatory framework. The outcome of this investigation remains uncertain, with no final legal verdict or penalty having been announced yet.
