Spreading COVID-19 Vaccines Faster in Contra Costa County

Vast Unfilled Slots in Contra Costa: Over 20,000 Health Appointments Available

After making vaccines available for residents and workers aged 50 and older, Contra Costa County is planning to broaden the eligible group due to having 20,000 open shot appointments.

Counting the Slots

Will Harper, Contra Costa Health Services spokesperson, revealed on March 29th that the county plans to expand vaccine eligibility to anyone who is 16 or older and resides or works in the county. He noted that the timing for this move hasn't been finalized yet, but it's on the horizon, especially considering the thousands of available appointments.

Vaccination Efforts

According to Harper, the county's fence-sitters are encouraged to get their appointments as soon as possible since the exact number of those eligible isn't known yet. The county's current vaccine slots are open for those eligible to get their shots.

Keeping Up with Demand

Contra Costa County has been successful in vaccinating a significant portion of its population. As of March 29, about 44% of residents aged 16 or older have received at least one vaccine dose, and about 25% are fully vaccinated, according to the county's vaccine database. Still, those numbers could increase dramatically once the eligibility requirements are loosened.

Bay Area Struggles

While some Bay Area counties have faced challenges in vaccinating their eligible residents, Contra Costa County is actively seeking out more individuals to provide doses to. One reason for this trend is the recent implementation of a federal program designed to inoculate underserved communities and populations heavily impacted by COVID-19 through federally-qualified community health centers. In addition to its weekly vaccine allotment from the state, the county has received thousands of additional doses from the federal government.

Statewide Expansion

Starting March 30, Californians ages 50 and up in all 58 counties can get vaccinated through regular channels, such as public health departments and healthcare providers. In two weeks, on April 15, all Californians aged 16 and older will be eligible for a vaccine.
