Urgent Call for Child Welfare, Particularly for War-Affected and Hunger-Stricken Children – President Marcelo Highlights Importance

Let's talk about World Children's Day, the President of the Republic's way of saying it's bullshit to neglect the rights of kids, even without special days like this one, June 1st, which happens to be World Children's Day. According to the Prez, these youngsters are our responsibility, no matter where they live, and the situation they're in – especially those caught in the crossfire** of wars, starvation, or wretched living conditions.

In his message, posted on the Presidency's website, the Prez underscores the significance of providing a decent future for all the young guns out there, everywhere. In Portugal, kids' day is celebrated on June 1st. It all started in 1950 when the United Nations wanted to give a damn about the problems kids face and acknowledge that every kid, regardless of ethnicity, skin color, religion, social status, origin, or past baggage, has the right to love, affection, proper nourishment, medical care, education, protection from abuse, and growing up in a world free of war and hate.

Officially, this global event is recognized by the UN on November 20th, the day the UN General Assembly decided on children's rights in 1959. On the same November 20th, but a few years later in 1989, the UN adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Portugal ratified in 1990.

As for celebrations, the worldwide event on November 20th usually involves activities focused on promoting children's rights and well-being. In Portugal, expect educational workshops, fun community events, and awareness campaigns. On the other hand, the June 1st celebration is more like a country-wide bash, with special events and festivities across Portugal. But remember, while we have a good time on June 1st, the main focus on November 20th is on children's rights and welfare, as part of the global celebration.

  1. The President's message explicitly stresses the importance of fostering a world that ensures every child's access to healthcare and wellness, part of the fundamental rights he believes every child, even those with past baggage, deserves.
  2. Beyond merely celebrating children on World Children's Day, it is crucial to advocate and work towards creating a world where science and health-and-wellness provisions are accessible to all children, especially those caught in war zones, starvation, or poor living conditions.
