University of Halle's Center for Chiral Electronics Secures Significant Funding in Federal and State Initiative

The Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) has been chosen as one of the recipients of special funding under the German federal and state governments' Excellence Strategy. The "Center for Chiral Electronics" (CCE) is among the 70 projects across the nation that will receive funding starting from 2026, for a period of seven years, as announced by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Science Council in Bonn. The research undertaken by the CCE will focus on groundbreaking concepts for powerful and energy-efficient electronics. The University of Halle, with its partners—the Free University of Berlin, the University of Regensburg, and the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics—submitted the application.

According to the University of Halle, the funding awarded amounts to up to €64.5 million. The CCE is set to begin in January 2026 and will run for a duration of seven years. Discussing the funding, Rector of the university, Claudia Becker, stated that the funds will be directed towards exceptional research projects in materials science. The university has been increasing its focus on this research area in recent years, with the Excellence Strategy funding serving as recognition of this effort.

Saxony-Anhalt's Science Minister, Armin Willingmann (SPD), expressed his delight at the university's success in the latest round of the Excellence Strategy. He said that the achievement signified a significant milestone not just for the university, but also for the entire federal state. The Minister anticipates vital impulses for research within the state and enhanced international attention for science in Eastern Germany.

The Otto von Guericke Universität Magdeburg, another applicant, was unsuccessful in its bid to transform chemical and biotechnological production processes sustainably, based on a green circular economy for carbon.

The new funding is part of the German government's initiative to support cutting-edge research, with the focus on innovative electronic devices that will contribute to advancing Germany's position in the global research landscape.

  1. The University of Halle, in collaboration with the Free University of Berlin, the University of Regensburg, and the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, will implement a seven-year vocational training program focused on chiral electronics with the goal of producing powerful and energy-efficient electronic devices, supported by funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Science Council under the Excellence Strategy.
  2. In light of the importance of health and wellness, the University of Halle's Community Policy will be developed to address medical-conditions beside the research in chiral electronics, enhancing their research scope and contributing to science in Eastern Germany, as part of the German government's initiative aimed at both supporting excellent research and positioning Germany as a global leader in scientific innovation.
