Universities Scramble as Trump's Orders Threaten NSF Funding, Impacting Graduate Admissions and REU Programs

Universities across the U.S. are grappling with funding uncertainties, particularly in the National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, following President Donald Trump's executive orders targeting 'Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion' (DEI) and 'Preferencing'. This has led to a ripple effect, impacting graduate admissions and Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs.

Several universities, including the University of Washington, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Iowa State University, and University of Southern California, have either paused or scaled back their graduate admissions or REU programs due to these funding uncertainties. The DREU program codirectors have advised students to explore additional research opportunities, given the uncertain NSF funding situation.

Undergraduate scientists have expressed frustration on platforms like r/REU, with some programs, such as an astronomy REU at the University of Texas, being canceled due to federal funding uncertainty. Tyler Stotland, a former climate change fellow at the USDA, has voiced concerns about these funding uncertainties affecting graduate school applications. Emily Miller, deputy vice president for institutional policy at the Association of American Universities, warns that funding reductions will hinder early-career scholars and transformational research.

The uncertainty surrounding NSF funding, stemming from President Trump's executive orders, has led to universities reviewing grants and adjusting their graduate admissions and REU programs. Undergraduate scientists and early-career scholars are feeling the impact, with potential long-term effects on research and academic progress.
