Hubble Space Telescope Operates with Single Gyroscope, Limits Earth Observations

The Hubble Space Telescope, a cornerstone of space exploration for nearly three decades, is currently operating with only one functional gyroscope. This decision by NASA indicates a commitment to extending the telescope's lifespan and continuing its valuable contributions to scientific research.

The Hubble Space Telescope, designed with multiple gyroscopes and extensive redundancy for its critical components, can switch operational systems, such as the science computer, to work around failed components. However, with just one working gyro, Hubble's ability to precisely point and stabilize for observations is severely limited.

This restriction has led to reduced scientific operations or placing the telescope into a "safe" or "sleep" mode until repairs or servicing missions can be executed or alternative operational methods are found. Currently, no plans for a direct servicing mission exist.

The reduced capability to observe objects closer to Earth, such as Venus and the Moon, may limit the Hubble Space Telescope's contribution to certain areas of study. In contrast, its partnership with the James Webb Space Telescope provides astronomers with unique capabilities to study the universe. Together, they offer the ability to observe the universe in different ranges of light, gathering valuable information about its nature and evolution.

Despite the challenges, the Hubble Space Telescope remains a crucial instrument in space exploration. It is expected to continue contributing to scientific research through the mid-2030s. NASA has opted to keep the Hubble Space Telescope in operation using a single gyroscope, with the second kept in reserve.
