Transformation of Global Healthcare through AI by 2025: Philips report emphasizes immediate action by leaders

The latest Future Health Index (FHI) 2025 report by Royal Philips highlights the significance of trust in AI technology for healthcare professionals and patients alike. The report reveals that trust is essential due to concerns over accountability, transparency, evidence, and ethical/legal safeguards, without which stakeholders are reluctant to fully embrace AI technologies.

Patients want AI to work safely, effectively, reduce errors, improve outcomes, and enable more personalized, compassionate care. However, trust lags among many patients, with concerns about proper testing and understanding who developed the AI systems. This trust gap is critical, as 76% of Indian healthcare professionals are optimistic that AI can improve patient outcomes, but patients remain more hesitant globally.

Healthcare professionals largely view AI as a tool to enhance their work rather than a threat to jobs. They cite growing burnout from non-clinical tasks if AI is not implemented and fear missed opportunities for early diagnosis and intervention. The report indicates that by 2030, AI could potentially double patient capacity by automating administrative tasks and assisting clinicians.

The report identifies key factors limiting trust: clear guidelines for AI use and its limitations, clarity on legal liability for AI-driven decisions, scientific proof of AI’s effectiveness, continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure AI remains reliable and safe, and transparency on how AI recommendations are derived and reassurance about data security. Over 75% of respondents are unclear about liability for AI-driven errors.

In more than half of the 16 countries surveyed, patients are waiting nearly two months or more for specialist appointments. This prolonged wait can lead to more than 1 in 4 patients ending up in the hospital. Moreover, over 75% of healthcare professionals report losing clinical time due to incomplete or inaccessible patient data, and 33% of patients have experienced worsening health due to delays in seeing a doctor.

To build trust with clinicians, education, transparency, rigorous validation, and the involvement of healthcare professionals are crucial. The FHI 2025 Report indicates that AI holds promise for transforming care delivery, but the key lies in addressing the trust barrier to ensure a smooth and widespread adoption of AI-enabled care.
