In Bacolod City, a tragic event unfolded on September 7 when a two-year-old girl lost her life due to suspected dengue. The girl, a resident of Purok Active, Barangay Mandalagan, had been suffering from on-and-off fever and one episode of postprandial vomiting before being admitted to a hospital.

Dr. Grace Tan, head of the City Health Office's Environmental Sanitation Division, confirmed the sad news. The girl's death marks the sixth dengue-related fatality in Bacolod City this year.

Early consultation and treatment are advised for those showing symptoms of dengue, a preventable disease that affects all ages and genders. Dengue symptoms include fever or flu-like illness.

The onset of the rainy season increases the risk of vector-borne and waterborne diseases like dengue. To combat this, the Bacolod City Council has passed a resolution to intensify preventive campaigns against dengue, leptospirosis, and influenza.

Councilor Caesar Distrito, who authored the resolution, urged the City Health Office and all barangays to intensify information drives, cleanup campaigns, and early detection measures. Mansilingan, being the barangay with the most dengue cases in Bacolod, has recorded 86 cases so far this year.

The Department of Health's "4S" strategy is essential in the fight against dengue. This strategy involves search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, use self-protection measures, seek early consultation, and support fogging and spraying efforts.

Despite the tragic loss, there is some good news. From January 1 to September 6, dengue cases in Bacolod have decreased by 42.3 percent compared with the same period in 2024. Bacolod City has logged 811 dengue cases so far this year.

The Bacolod City Council's resolution to intensify prevention campaigns, cleanup campaigns, and early detection measures can significantly reduce infections and avoid overwhelming hospitals. Let us all do our part in keeping our communities safe from preventable diseases like dengue, leptospirosis, and influenza.
