Switzerland Battles New Covid Wave as Consultations Surge

Switzerland is grappling with a fresh wave of Covid-19, with medical consultations for respiratory infections surging. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) reports 101 Covid-related consultations per 100,000 inhabitants in the second week of September, up from 69 in the same period last year and 59 in 2023. The virus, which continues to mutate, is now more common than before.

Health authorities warn that Covid-19 will persist, albeit in milder forms. Infectious disease experts had previously cautioned about its continued circulation. The FOPH notes that specific numbers for current Covid-19 medical consultations are unavailable, but the trend is clear: Switzerland is experiencing more Covid-related visits than in the last two years.

Vaccinations remain crucial. Flu shots are recommended for at-risk individuals, especially the elderly and those with health conditions. They are typically available from the second week of November. Similarly, Covid vaccines are advised for those over 65 and people with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems. Both vaccinations are covered by health insurance for seniors.

The ideal time to get a Covid vaccination is between mid-October and mid-December, six months after the last Covid vaccination or known coronavirus infection. As the virus continues to mutate and circulate, staying up-to-date with vaccinations is vital for protecting public health.
