Swift action saves a British sailor from a wasp sting in Turkey
In the tranquil waters of Marmaris, Turkey, on September 11, a dramatic rescue unfolded. 74-year-old Nick Chapman, a British sailor, found himself in a perilous situation after being stung by a wasp off the coast of Bozukkale.
Claire Chapman, Nick's wife, quickly sent out a distress radio call for help. The call was answered by two Turkish female captains, Doga Serhan Akalın and Caglar Calışkan, who were sailing nearby. Without a moment's hesitation, they raced to Chapman's boat.
The response from Captains Doğa and Çağlar, along with the Coast Guard, was swift and remarkable. Upon arriving at the scene, they found Chapman unconscious due to the wasp sting. They administered an adrenaline injection to him, under the guidance of cardiologist Dr. Turgay Bulucu, which revived him.
Captain Çalışkan emphasized the importance of timely intervention and teamwork at sea for survival. Captain Akalın highlighted the importance of having adrenaline on board, stating it was crucial in saving Chapman's life.
Claire Chapman described the incident as a sudden ordeal, with her husband losing consciousness quickly. However, she expressed her deep gratitude for the incredible response from the Turkish captains and the Coast Guard.
After three days of treatment, Chapman was discharged from the hospital. He expressed his deep affection for Marmaris and Turkey, stating he and his wife do not plan to leave anytime soon.
In the wake of this event, Captain Çalışkan reiterated the importance of everyone helping each other in order to make a difference in emergencies at sea. This act of heroism serves as a testament to the spirit of camaraderie and unity that exists among seafarers, transcending borders and cultures.
