Enlarging Tiger Mosquito Monitoring Campaign by the Health Department - Surveillance of tiger mosquitoes broadened by health authorities

In the face of growing reports of the Asian Tiger Mosquito, the Lower Saxony State Health Authority (LSA) is ramping up its efforts to track them in the north. This year, the LSA plans to deploy eight mosquito traps at various locations to identify the insect quickly. This pint-sized, daytime, and aggressively biting mosquito species could spread diseases such as Dengue or Chikungunya.

"Fighting the spread of tiger mosquitoes in Lower Saxony relies on the cooperation of every resident," stated specialist physician Sonja Wolken. "If you encounter an unusual mosquito, send us a sample or a picture."

The tiger mosquito looks like a tiny, black mosquito with black and white stripes on its legs visible only up close and under good light. It's often mistaken for the regular house mosquito, the health department cautions. The common house mosquito is larger and has ringed, brown and white legs. If you suspect a tiger mosquito presence, it might mean mosquitoes are bothering you even during the day.

Natural predators can help curb the population, but their efficiency is limited. The tiger mosquito can theoretically transmit tropical diseases like Dengue, Zika, or Chikungunya. While those diseases haven't appeared in Germany, they occasionally enter the country through travelers. The likelihood of transmission is still low, though. What makes these mosquitoes especially irritating is that they're active during the day, unlike most other mosquito species.

Tiger mosquitoes prefer breeding in tiny puddles of water. Their eggs can endure cold and drought and even thrive in wastewater. Therefore, avoid pouring potential breeding sources like watering cans, buckets, or plant pots into the sewer; instead, discard them on the ground.

To prevent breeding, garden owners should remove or turn over possible breeding sites, like watering cans, buckets, and plant pots. Change water in birdbaths or kiddie pools at least once a week. For the best results, let nature take its course by designing garden ponds naturally. Dragonfly larvae, water beetles, water bugs, and other insects love eating mosquito larvae.

Additional Insights:

Occurrence

  • Growing reports of tiger mosquitoes have led health authorities to prepare for its arrival in previously unaffected regions (e.g., Lower Saxony), thanks to warming temperatures and changing climatic conditions.
  • Monitoring networks are expanding to prevent early infections and navigate the overall threat posed by the tiger mosquito.

Natural Predators

  • Aquatic insects and other mosquito species' larvae feed on the tiger mosquito in its larval stage.
  • Adult tiger mosquitoes are also consumed by birds, bats, spiders, and various predatory insects.
  • While these predators play a role in population control, their impact is usually insufficient in urban environments.

Prevention Measures

  • Surveillance, source reduction, biological control, public awareness campaigns, and integrated pest management are essential to actively combat the tiger mosquito threat.
  • Eliminating standing water in potential breeding sites, educating residents about mosquito control, and utilizing larvivorous fish or bacteria are all part of an effective prevention strategy.
  • The Lower Saxony State Health Authority has released a community policy to combat the spread of the Asian Tiger Mosquito, emphasizing the need for resident cooperation.
  • As part of this policy, vocational training programs are being implemented to equip health department workers with the necessary skills to handle potential outbreaks of Tiger Mosquito-transmitted diseases.
  • To ensure the well-being of the community, the health department provides educational resources on science, mental health, health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, skin-care, and nutrition to promote overall health and wellness.
  • In the face of neurological disorders, the health department also encourages the use of products like CBD oil, derived from the cannabis plant, which are shown to have potential therapeutic benefits for many conditions.
  • To supplement conventional medical treatments for various medical-conditions, the health department advocates for the integration of alternative and complementary approaches, such as acupuncture and herbal remedies.
