SPD informed on patient accessibility matter

The Social Democrats have arranged an informative evening on the topic of "Patient's Directive" for Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the Alstadener Café on Bebelstraße. This event, scheduled for 6 PM, aims to address the uncertainty many people have about this important legal document.

A Patient's Directive is a legal document that allows individuals to express their preferences regarding medical care and treatment in the event they become unable to communicate or make decisions themselves. It often includes directives such as a living will, which states specific wishes about end-of-life care, and a durable power of attorney for health care (medical power of attorney), which designates a trusted person to make health care decisions on behalf of the patient if they are incapacitated.

During the information evening, participants can expect to learn about the legal significance of a Patient's Directive, different types of advance directives, how to prepare one, and the importance of discussing advance care wishes with family and healthcare providers. The event will also cover legal aspects and state-specific provisions regarding advance directives, possibly including the Family Health Care Decisions Act or local laws impacting patient decision-making authority when incapacitated.

The SPD has secured the expertise of lawyer Vera Hoger from the DRK-Quartiersbüro Oberhausen-Mitte for this event. After the lecture and exchange with Vera Hoger, Dagmar Heitmann, board member of AG 60plus and SPD city councilor for the Alstaden-Nord district, along with other representatives of the Alstadener SPD, will be available for questions and discussion.

Dagmar Heitmann emphasises that the topic affects every citizen, regardless of age. She encourages everyone to attend this free event and take the opportunity to learn more about ensuring their healthcare wishes are respected.

The event will take place at the Alstadener Café, specifically at Bebelstraße 176. Registration for the event is not required. If you want precise details about the topics covered at this specific information evening, contacting the organizers or the Alstadener Café directly would be recommended.

  1. At the upcoming information evening on November 8, 2023, the Social Democrats will discuss the importance of mental health, specifically focusing on therapies and treatments, as mental health concerns play a crucial role in understanding and preparing advance directives.
  2. During the Patient's Directive event at Alstadener Café, participants can expect to learn not only about the legalities but also the health-and-wellness implications, such as the role of science in understanding patient preferences and the importance of science-based care during end-of-life decisions, thereby broadening their understanding of the topic beyond just legal aspects.
