Spain to Extend Smoking Ban to Public Spaces, Including Electronic Cigarettes

In a move aimed at further limiting tobacco use, Spain is planning to expand its smoking ban to cover public areas such as restaurant terraces and outdoor spaces in bars. The health minister, Monica García, announced the progress on Thursday.

The proposed ban would not only target traditional tobacco but also electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco devices. The ban, which is still subject to approval by the government council and parliament's lower house, is designed to place Spain at the forefront of the fight against smoking.

Places affected by the ban would include school playgrounds, university campuses, company vehicles, outdoor festive events, and public transport shelters.

As part of its anti-smoking plan, the Spanish government has also been working on measures to support individuals who wish to quit smoking and increase tax on tobacco and similar products.

Spain is not the only European country contemplating such measures. France is set to introduce a ban on smoking at outdoor restaurant and café terraces, while Italy has been considering a similar law without any significant progress made thus far.

The push towards smoke-free public spaces is part of a broader international trend. Other countries, like the UK and Canada, have already implemented strict indoor smoking bans and are now considering extending these to outdoor spaces.

World Health Organization recommendations urge all countries to take urgent action to ban flavored tobacco and nicotine products, including electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco devices, and impose comprehensive bans on their advertising and promotion, particularly to protect youth.

There is a growing international consensus to reclaim public spaces as smoke-free zones, with many countries now focusing on extending existing bans to outdoor spaces and including electronic and heated tobacco devices in these restrictions.
