Smart Vacuum Robot 'Smart Companion' Aids Elderly in Falls
A new project, 'Smart Companion', aims to aid elderly individuals living alone who may fall and require assistance. The project, developed by researchers at FH St. Pölten, involves a smart vacuum cleaner robot that can detect falls and call for help using voice assistants like Alexa. The robot has been tested by senior residents of the Samariterbund in Linz, showing promising acceptance and functionality.
One-third of people over 65 years old fall at least once a year, highlighting the need for assistance in such situations. The 'Smart Companion' project seeks to address this issue. The robot, independently cleaning apartments, was accepted by the senior residents who tested it, demonstrating its potential in emergencies.
The project team, including the Arbeiter Samariter Bund (ASB) and Robert Bosch AG, paid close attention to data protection and privacy. The system was approved by an independent ethics commission, ensuring user confidence. The Academy for Age Research at the Haus der Barmherzigkeit provided valuable insights into caring for and supporting the elderly, as well as the ethical dimensions of the project.
The 'Smart Companion' project, a collaboration between FH St. Pölten, ASB, and Robert Bosch AG, has shown promising results in aiding elderly individuals living alone who may fall. The smart vacuum cleaner robot, accepted by senior residents, can detect falls and call for help, potentially reducing the risk of injuries and emphasizing the need for such innovative developments.
