Singer Justin Timberlake discloses his Lyme disease diagnosis, describing it as 'overwhelmingly debilitating'
In the midst of his 15-month trek for the Forget Tomorrow World Tour, pop icon Justin Timberlake faced unexpected challenges. The tour, which kicked off in April 2024 and supported Timberlake's sixth studio album, Everything I Thought It Was (2024), was marked by more than just electrifying performances.
Some concertgoers joked that the concert could have been an email and expressed dissatisfaction with Timberlake's singing. However, behind the scenes, the singer was battling a far more challenging adversary – Lyme disease.
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread to people through the bite of blacklegged ticks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, fatigue, and a skin rash called erythema migrans. Common symptoms experienced by celebrities like Timberlake, Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne, and Justin Bieber with Lyme disease include fatigue, joint and muscle pain, neurological issues, dizziness, balance problems, and cognitive difficulties.
Timberlake, a 44-year-old father of two, described Lyme as a "relentlessly debilitating" condition affecting his energy and ability to perform on stage. Despite this, he continued touring, driven by his passion for performing.
The diagnosis came after the end of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour. Timberlake had to cancel several shows during the tour due to health issues, including the flu, a back injury, bronchitis, and laryngitis. However, his decision to continue touring was motivated by the joy he finds in performing.
Timberlake's performance at the final stretch of his tour was speculated to be lackluster due to online videos. However, his determination to complete the tour was commendable. Upon the tour's conclusion, he thanked his crew, band, and fans for their support.
In a July 31 Instagram post, Timberlake made his Lyme disease diagnosis public. He expressed his desire to help others experiencing the same condition, stating, "I feel fortunate to be starting treatment now and already feeling better."
Despite the challenges, Timberlake remains optimistic. He joins a list of celebrities who have been open about their Lyme disease diagnosis, including Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne, and Justin Bieber. If untreated, the infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Early diagnosis and treatment usually lead to better outcomes, but some experience prolonged, chronic symptoms requiring ongoing management.
A TikTok video shows Timberlake asking the audience to sing most of the lyrics to his hit song, "Can't Stop the Feeling!" during a concert in Transylvania, Romania. Despite his health struggles, Timberlake's spirit and love for music remain undeterred.
