A recent school event in Germany, organized by Yvonne Koth and Mirko Samietz, focused on raising awareness about HPV-related cancers and prevention. It featured personal stories from cancer survivors like Sandra Zimmermann, Yvonne Koth, and Dirk Rohde, who shared their experiences with cancer. Yvonne, despite her terminal illness, uses her story to educate others about cancer prevention and early detection. Dirk, a motorcycle police officer, returned to his job after having half of his tongue and all neck lymph nodes removed due to tongue base cancer. Sandra, diagnosed with skin cancer at 31, is now cancer-free but still faces some limitations from her treatment. Skin cancer, including malignant melanoma, is common in Germany, with around 372,000 cases each year. Early education and prevention are key to combating cancer, as highlighted by the speakers. The German Cancer Society offers information, advice, and support through regional cancer societies and the INFONETZ Cancer of the German Cancer Aid. Roughly half of the German population will get cancer at some point, with around 500,000 new cases diagnosed annually, and almost half of all cancer cases are preventable. Yvonne and Dirk actively use social media to improve vaccination rates against cancer-causing diseases. The school event successfully raised awareness about cancer prevention and early detection, highlighting the importance of regular examinations, vaccinations, and the need for personal stories to inspire action. The German Cancer Society stands ready to support patients and relatives with information and advice.
