Federal Government Taps Virologist Streeck as Drug Czar

In a bid to strengthen the national response to drug-related issues, the Federal Government has appointed Hendrik Streeck, a renowned virologist and CDU member of the Bundestag, as the Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues.

The renowned scientist and health policy expert, who entered the Bundestag in February's election, will oversee addiction treatment efforts, digital risk management, and cannabis legalization policy. Health Minister Nina Warken lauded Streeck's appointment, stating that his medical background would help to depolarize the often emotionally charged drug debate and build a less fragmented response to addiction.

Streeck, whose academic background in virology has earned him recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic, intends to apply his knowledge in healthcare and research to address challenges associated with addiction, digital risks, and novel dangerous substances among children and young people.

The appointment is part of a broader realignment in German health policy, which aims to streamline addiction treatment, care services, and patient representation across federal states. Streeck's role involves ensuring that all federal states and relevant authorities adopt consistent approaches, particularly in matters related to gambling addiction.

Lastly, when it comes to cannabis legalization, Streeck has previously expressed nuanced views, acknowledging the potential impact of marijuana on adolescent brain development and mental health but also advocating for self-determination and proportionality in framing policy. The Union and SPD have plans for an open-ended evaluation of the existing legal framework this fall, following the initial provisions made in the legalization law, which allows adults to smoke marijuana with restrictions, starting April 1, 2024.
