Band of Builders Completes Heartwarming Home Renovation for Toby Fletcher

In a moving display of compassion and dedication, the national construction charity Band of Builders has completed a remarkable renovation project for Toby Fletcher, a 16-year-old boy with quadriplegic cerebral palsy and dystonia, near Swaffham, Norfolk.

The project, which was initially started by Toby’s late father, Shaun Fletcher, aimed to provide a completed home for Toby and his family. Shaun, a 44-year-old electrician, passed away last December following mental health struggles.

Before the renovations, Toby’s room was an unfinished shell on the ground floor, making it impossible for his mother, Sarah Fletcher, to access overnight support. Completing the room means Toby can now receive round-the-clock palliative support safely and more comfortably.

Over 150 volunteers from Band of Builders, including groundworkers, electricians, bathroom fitters, plumbers, decorators, landscapers, solar panel engineers, and smart home specialists, worked tirelessly to transform the property in just 12 days. The project was supported by sponsors like Dewalt and SolaX, who recognized its scale and impact.

Tim Winstanley, senior brand manager at Dewalt, expressed his admiration for the volunteers' compassion and dedication, stating that it was an honour to support such a worthy cause. Gavin Crane, chief executive of Band of Builders, called the project their most ambitious to date, praising the volunteers for their inspiring compassion and dedication.

The completed home is a poignant legacy for Shaun Fletcher and a place where the family can start healing. Toby, who is housebound and relies on stretcher transport for all appointments, now has a home that caters to his unique needs. The renovations included installing a ceiling track hoist, a specially designed bathroom, and a smart home system to control lights and heating.

The project has had a profound impact on Toby Fletcher’s life and his family. Sarah Fletcher expressed immense gratitude, saying the home is now complete and safe, providing her family relief and honoring Shaun’s memory. The project also raised awareness about the pressures of caregiving, grief, and mental health.

The Band of Builders' initiative stands as their most ambitious and heartfelt endeavor, helping a family in crisis by fulfilling a critical need and preserving the legacy of a father’s love for his son.
