Remembrance: Scholar Tom McLeish, FRS, Passed Away
Remembering Professor Tom McLeish: A Pioneer in Science and Faith Integration
We mourn the loss of Professor Tom McLeish, a renowned theoretical physicist and Christian apologist who passed away in 2023. McLeish was a significant figure in the scientific community, particularly known for his work on the properties of soft matter, and for his unique ability to integrate his Christian faith with science.
McLeish was a long-time co-investigator on the Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science (ECLAS) project, which he co-founded with the project's Principal, David Wilkinson. The ECLAS project aimed to change the culture of how senior Christian leaders view science, moving from fear to joy. McLeish's work and personal example as a leading scientist who was open about his Christian faith would have significantly contributed to ECLAS’s aim to equip Christian leaders with a sound understanding of science and its implications for faith and leadership in the modern age.
In 2018, McLeish was honoured with the Lanfranc Award for Education and Scholarship from the Archbishop of Canterbury, in recognition of his exceptional work as a scientist and his significant contributions to the dialogue between science and faith.
McLeish served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at Durham from 2008 to 2014, a role that further solidified his reputation as a respected academic and apologist. His role in the inception and development of the ECLAS project was significant, as he was a key figure in its conception and growth.
David Wilkinson, the Principal, expressed his gratitude for the privilege of McLeish's friendship and the insights he provided on science and theology. He considered McLeish to be a close friend, mentor, and inspiration. Wilkinson also extended his love, sympathy, and prayers to McLeish's wife, Julie, and the entire family during this difficult time.
McLeish's contributions to the ECLAS project were not limited to his academic expertise. He brought wisdom, boundless energy, and a passion that celebrated both science and Christian faith to the project. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and Christian faith.
In memory of Professor Tom McLeish, let us remember a man who embodied the integration of scientific excellence and Christian belief, and who helped leaders navigate the intersection of these realms with grace, wisdom, and passion.
Tom McLeish's work extended beyond science as he was involved in the ECLAS project, aiming to foster a positive perspective towards science within Christian leaders, focusing not only on the properties of soft matter but also on mental health and wellness by promoting a balanced approach that integrates science and faith. His contributions to this project will continue to inspire future generations to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and mental health and wellness, along with Christian faith.
