Prominent Dentist Dr. William R. Calnon Honored with Distinguished Service Award

Dr. William R. Calnon, a renowned figure in the dental profession, has been presented with the prestigious Dr. Mark J. Feldman Distinguished Service Award. This accolade is one of the highest honors bestowed by the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA).

Dr. Calnon's extensive career in dentistry has been marked by a series of significant achievements. In 2012, he made history as the first dentist from Upstate New York to be named American Dental Association (ADA) president since 1899, a year in which Harvey J. Burkhart, the first director of the Rochester Dental Dispensary, served as ADA president.

Dr. Calnon's journey in dentistry began with his dental degree from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in 1978. He then completed his General Practice Residency in 1979 at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH) at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Throughout his career, Dr. Calnon has demonstrated exceptional leadership and service to the dental profession, which has been recognised on both local and national levels. He has been a member of the Council on Dental Practice and served on multiple key committees since 1998.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Calnon has held several notable positions. He is the current president of the Eastman Dental Foundation Board and has served as a leadership representative at the National Summit on Diversity in Dentistry. He also served as a trustee on the ADA Board representing New York and as the EIOH interim director in 2012.

Dr. Calnon's partner in a general dentistry practice in Chili, NY, Dr. Eliav, DMD, PhD, EIOH director and professor, has praised Dr. Calnon as a deserving individual for the award due to his 35 years of leadership and advocacy in the field of dentistry.

The award is named after Dr. Mark J. Feldman, the previous NYSDA executive director who passed away last year. This recognition serves as a testament to Dr. Calnon's commitment and dedication to the dental profession, mirroring the values and spirit of Dr. Feldman.

As we celebrate Dr. Calnon's accomplishments, we are reminded of the lasting impact that dedicated professionals like him have on the field of dentistry and the lives of countless patients. His wisdom and experience continue to be an invaluable asset to the profession.
