Proposed Renovation Blueprints Revealed for Edinburgh Housing Plagued with Mould

The City of Edinburgh Council has announced plans for a significant renovation project, aimed at improving the lives of over 150 families living in the residential blocks of Oxcars Court and Inchmickery Court in the Muirhouse Estate.

The development, backed by the council, is currently in progress, with work on the Muirhouse Estate revamp underway. subject to approval, work on the overhauling of these two housing blocks is expected to start in January 2024.

The project, led by Stallan-Brand, is considered an 'extremely complex building typology' due to the open access decks, exposed concrete exoskeleton, architectural detailing with numerous complicated junctions, and the sheer scale of the buildings. Each building has an area of approximately 9,015 square meters.

The buildings, constructed in the 1960s, have been plagued with mould and damp issues, largely due to their complicated exoskeleton structure and lack of insulation. The exposed concrete beams and columns create direct cold bridges, further exacerbating these problems.

The aim of the project is to eliminate fuel poverty by bringing the homes up to, and beyond, current standards. This will not only improve the living conditions for the residents but also help combat fuel poverty in the area.

Places for People has agreed to undertake the comprehensive renovation of these residential blocks. The company has lodged a planning application to retrofit the two council housing blocks, with further planning applications expected to cover the masterplan and landscape proposals for the remaining 3.5ha plot.

The renovation project comes in the wake of the tragic death of Awaab Ishak at the end of last year. It is now law that landlords cannot leave tenants in damp and mouldy homes, making this project all the more crucial.

The renovation is part of a broader effort to improve living conditions in the Muirhouse Estate in Edinburgh. The project is expected to set a new standard for sustainable and inclusive housing, providing a model for similar projects in the future.

As work progresses, residents can look forward to a brighter, warmer, and healthier future in their homes. The renovation of Oxcars Court and Inchmickery Court is not just a renovation project, but a step towards a better quality of life for the residents of the Muirhouse Estate.
