In the heart of Stuttgart, the State Theatre is carefully reviewing plans for an interim building needed during the renovation of its opera house. The review comes as a result of dramatic changes in the budget situation of municipalities and the state, which have significantly impacted the theatre's financial landscape.

The main reason for the review is the increased construction costs in Germany, causing a need for significant revision in the basic concept for the interim building. The State Theatre Stuttgart, known for its rich history and commitment to theatre, opera, and ballet, is prioritising the future home for these arts in the 2040s.

Marc-Oliver Hendriks, the managing intendant of the State Theatre, emphasises the need to look towards the future. He does not expect a decline in audience numbers during the renovation period and stresses the importance of maintaining the current audience structure. The theatre aims to remain present and not perform less during the interim stage.

The planned interim building is intended to serve as a temporary venue for approximately ten years. To ensure compatibility with the status quo after the renovation, the capacities of the interim building should not be reduced significantly. The supervisory board of the Württemberg State Theatres has announced a review of the plans for the interim venue, with a focus on creating crucial framework conditions.

Despite the challenges, the State Theatre is determined to keep operations running smoothly. They are considering temporary or interim solutions, such as offering a mix of classic operas, modern productions, and community engagement initiatives, to appeal to a diverse audience, including both long-standing patrons and new generations of opera-goers.

The timeline for the renovation of the opera house in Stuttgart has already been pushed back, with the construction of the interim performance venue now starting in 2028 and ending in 2032. As more details emerge, the public is encouraged to stay informed through local media or official announcements from the opera house itself.

  1. The supervisory board of the Württemberg State Theatres is reviewing the plans for the interim venue, focusing on establishing policy frameworks that align with the science of construction and the health-and-wellness of the community, ensuring fitness and exercise facilities are included within the design.
  2. To attract a broad audience during the renovation period and maintain employment while prioritizing the future of theatre, opera, and ballet, the State Theatre Stuttgart is considering adopting an employment policy that includes producing a diverse series of performances, incorporating science and health-and-wellness-focused community engagement initiatives, and promoting fitness and exercise programs as part of its overall strategy.
