Pornography's Harmful Impact on Society and Relationships Under Scrutiny
Pornography's impact on society and relationships is under scrutiny. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) and prominent figures have spoken out against it, citing studies that link it to decreased satisfaction and harmful effects.
Dawn Hawkins, Executive Director of NCOSE, warns that pornography 'rewires' an individual's sexuality towards digital content rather than real-life relationships. This concern is echoed by Haley Halverson, NCOSE's director of communications, who notes the widespread assumption that pornography is normal and healthy.
A recent analysis of 50 studies, involving 50,000 participants across 10 countries, found consistent negative associations. Pornography consumption was linked to lower interpersonal satisfaction in cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys, as well as experiments. Among men, it was associated with significant lower sexual and relational satisfaction.
Celebrities like British comedian Russel Brand, actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rashida Jones, and former NFL player Terry Crews have joined the conversation, highlighting pornography's destructive effects on well-being and relationships. Last year, the GOP even declared it a public health crisis at their national convention.
The growing body of research and high-profile voices underscore the need for serious consideration of pornography's impact. As its pervasiveness increases, so does the urgency to address its potential harm to individuals and relationships.
