Twenty Years on Hormone Medication: Brain Tumors - Bayer Faces Compensation Claim

Patient receives compensation for acquired brain tumor linked to Bayer product

Insight: There have been no recent lawsuits against Bayer regarding undisclosed side effects of hormone medications and brain tumors; however, ongoing lawsuits against Pfizer for similar issues with a hormone-based contraceptive have been reported [4][5]. Additionally, previous lawsuits against Bayer regarding the Essure birth control device, which has been linked to health complications, were settled for $1.6 billion [5].

In an unexpected turn of events, Bayer, a renowned pharmaceutical giant, is facing potential compensation claims in France. A court in Poitiers ruled that the company, along with two other companies, a doctor, and a pharmacist, must collectively pay a sum of €300,000 as compensation to Veronique Dujardin. The ruling establishes the defendants as responsible for the damage inflicted upon Dujardin.

Dujardin, a long-time user of hormone preparation Androcur and a generic medication for excessive body hair and endometriosis, has experienced several benign brain tumors since 2013. These tumors have caused vision, memory problems, and debilitating fatigue. Dujardin's legal team argued that these side effects were already described in a 2008 scientific article. The court agreed that there was a connection between her drug treatment and the tumors.

The court's judgement implicates the pharmaceutical companies for negligence in informing the patient of potential risks. Dujardin's attorney claimed that the ruling would serve as a precedent for further compensation payments in similar cases.

Endometriosis, a common gynecological condition, affects girls and women. It entails the growth of tissue similar to the uterine lining in areas outside the uterus, leading to different symptoms caused by adhesions, adhesions, and inflammation depending on the body location affected.
