Partnership in Developing the Nurse Specialist Educational Pathway

Get ready, western NSW! Charles Sturt Uni has teamed up with Parkinson’s NSW and the Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) to launch a wild four-year initiative - the Motion Disorder Nurse Specialist Pilot Program. This program is like a wrecking ball, smashing down barriers and knocking out the lack of specialized care for people with Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions in our backyard.

Want to join the party? WNSW PHN is currently recruiting 12 hard-hitting, registered nurses to make a difference in this program. Time's ticking,应用截止于11月15日! Additional details on the program, including how to throw your hat in the ring, are available online at

This program is beyond the basics, aimed at beefing up access to specialized nursing care for residents in western NSW who are dealing with neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s.

Associate Professor of Nursing, Rachel Rossiter of the Charles Sturt School of Nursing, Midwifery and Indigenous Health, is the research and evaluation consultant for the program, ensuring the project delivers a solid punch on the frontlines. The program will extend like a throws a haymaker from the South Australian border all the way west to Bourke, Wentworth, Balranald, and Broken Hill, and east to Bathurst, Mudgee, and more.

“This program is the real deal,” Professor Rossiter said. “It’s a showcase of Charles Sturt University's dedication to collaborating with healthcare services and making a tangible impact on our communities.”

Parkinson’s NSW CEO, Jo-Anne Reeves, is all in, Announcing, “This program is gonna level up our understanding of Parkinson's in rural and remote communities, and we can’t wait to support and work with the 12 successful applicants!”

WNSW PHN CEO, Andrew Harvey, believes this pilot program is the first of its kind in the region, and it will pack a serious punch in terms of health outcomes. “Applications are open now, and this program is gonna wipe the floor with barriers for 12 registered nurses, giving them access to theoretical knowledge, practical skills, support, mentorship, and networking opportunities – leading to a sustainable, customized model of care for patients.”

The program’s steering committee is stacked with key players, including David Veness, the President of Parkinson’s NSW, healthcare professionals, community members with Parkinson’s experience, and carers.

Western NSW Primary Health Network (WNSW PHN) is one of the 31 Primary Health Networks across Australia, and their mission is to support frontline health services and amp up the efficiency and effectiveness of primary healthcare.

So grab your gloves, and get ready to watch the program take it to the mat for residents living with neurological conditions across Western NSW!
