Froze to Save: 1.8 Million Germans Lowered Home Heating Last Winter

Over 1.8 million individuals endure cold winter conditions to cut down on heating expenses

Cozying up to the cold is what over 1.8 million Germans did last winter. According to a survey by Verivox, a Heidelberg comparison portal, 3% of the population regularly turned their backs on warmth to save on heating costs. Those who used gas for heating were hit the hardest.

Last winter was a chilly one, with temperatures dipping significantly compared to the previous year. Throw in the return of the full VAT rate on natural gas in April 2024 and the continuous climb in CO2 prices, and you've got a recipe for lower comfort levels at home. That's according to Thorsten Storck, Verivox's energy expert.

A total of 1,007 individuals aged 18 to 79 were surveyed, with the results seemingly representative of the general population in terms of age, gender, and federal state.

As the cost of living and heating expenses continue to rise, it's no wonder that households are becoming more energy-conscious. This newly adopted mindset has led to various strategies, such as adjusting thermostats, improving insulation, using energy-efficient heating systems, and even exploring alternative heating sources to keep costs in check. These practiced measures echo the mounting awareness around energy consumption and financial management as energy prices soar, most significantly due to CO2 pricing mechanisms geared towards promoting lower carbon emissions.

This trend forms part of a broader movement aiming to strike a balance between energy affordability and environmental objectives in Germany's heating sector. However, more detailed statistics or exact percentages from the Verivox survey have yet to be disclosed in the search results.

  1. In an effort to balance energy affordability and environmental objectives, community policy discussions may focus on employment policies that encourage the adoption of energy-efficient heating systems.
  2. The rise in the cost of living and heating expenses has brought about a focus on health-and-wellness, as many households are implementing fitness-and-exercise routines to maintain well-being while keeping indoor temperatures low.
  3. Given the continuous climb in CO2 prices and the importance of environmental-science in reducing carbon emissions, finance experts suggest employment policies might be necessary to incentivize the development of innovative, sustainable, and cost-competitive technologies within the science, health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, and environmental-science sectors.
