Okanagan Camper Gearing Up for Zajac Ranch Camp for Children, Awaiting Pirate Pak Day
A Special Summer Experience at Zajac Ranch for Children
Every year, 400 campers with disabilities and medical conditions look forward to their stay at the Zajac Ranch for Children, a unique summer camp located on a 44-acre property at Stave Lake in Mission, British Columbia.
The ranch offers a fully accessible environment, with activities such as kayaking, horseback riding, and water sports, all adapted to cater to the needs of its campers. This enables these children and young adults to enjoy a carefree and joyful summer experience without barriers.
One of the campers, Gillian Rezanson, enjoys going for a midday walk outdoors with her service dog, Shamrock, and her personal support worker, Aleisha MacLeod. Gillian communicates using a program on an iPad with a British accent. She also speaks some sign language.
Aleisha MacLeod, who is also a camper at the ranch, mentioned that at the ranch, they can interact with other people and campers. Having people recognize Gillian and ensuring all her needs are met was a positive experience for both of them.
The high operating fees at the ranch are due to the need for a high number of support care workers in relation to the campers for a safe camp experience. However, these costs are offset by generous donations, such as those from White Spot’s Pirate Pak Day.
White Spot's Pirate Pak Day is an annual fundraising event held at White Spot restaurants across British Columbia. $2 from every Pirate Pak meal sold is donated directly to Zajac Ranch. This event has been running for 13 years and has helped raise over $1 million and served more than 530,000 Pirate Pak meals.
Zajac Ranch for Children president, Carmen Zajac, stated that the ranch is a special place, where children with disabilities and serious medical conditions can come together, make friends, and have a memorable summer experience.
As Gillian and Aleisha prepare for their annual trip to the ranch, they look forward to the camaraderie, the activities, and the sense of belonging that the Zajac Ranch for Children provides.
