Newly-appointed Drug Commissioner: Prominent Virologist Claims Fame Due to Coronavirus Research

German Virologist and Politician Hendrik Streeck Named as New Drug Commissioner

Berlin - Hendrik Streeck, the renowned virologist who gained national attention for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been appointed as the Federal Government Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues. The cabinet made the decision following a proposal by Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU), as announced in Berlin.

"As a doctor and scientist, I do not wish to lecture but to help, inform, and act," said Streeck, stressing the urgent need for improved protection for children and young people against addiction, digital risks, and emerging harmful substances.

Streeck, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), entered the Bundestag in the February 23rd election of this year. Prior to joining politics, he has served as director of the Institute of Virology at the University of Bonn since 2019. He will assume the role previously held by SPD politician Burkhard Blienert.

In addition, the cabinet appointed the CSU member of parliament Katrin Staffler (43) as the new commissioner for care, while Stefan Schwartze (51) of the SPD remains the patient commissioner of the government, having held this position in the previous legislative period.

Warken explained that effective health policy depends on open communication with all concerned parties. Streeck's wide appeal as a popular scientist, she believes, will help "objectify the emotionally charged drug debate." A topic of major interest in this legislative period is likely to involve the handling of the legalization of cannabis [1][2].

The Union and the SPD are planning an "open-ended evaluation" this fall, following a first evaluation already provided for in the legalization law [5]. Recreational cannabis use for adults with numerous restrictions has been allowed since April 1, 2024, as stipulated in the legalization law [2].
