Music Proven to Significantly Impact Mood and Wellbeing
New research from the British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST) reveals how music can significantly impact our mood and wellbeing. The study found that specific types of music can help us relax, focus, and even enhance physical performance.
A staggering 90.15% of participants used music to relax, with the most effective tracks having a slow tempo, simple melody, and no lyrics. The optimum listening time for relaxation was found to be 13 minutes. In contrast, just nine minutes of upbeat music with a fast tempo and positive lyrics can make people feel uplifted.
BAST founder Lyz Cooper collaborated with Marconi Union to create an eight-minute track, 'Weightless', designed to induce a trance-like state. The track's sustaining rhythm starts at 60 beats per minute and slows to around 50, mirroring the listener's heartbeat. Music with lyrics that resonate with listeners also plays a crucial role in processing and releasing sadness, providing relief and stability.
Music also aids focus and decision-making. Thirteen minutes of listening helps clear the mind and improve work performance. Furthermore, high-tempo music enhances physical performance during exercise, with women training putting in more effort when listening to pop songs with over 170 beats per minute.
The BAST's research underscores the therapeutic effects of music, suggesting it could be prescribed to help manage specific mood states. Whether it's relaxing, focusing, or boosting physical performance, music's impact on our wellbeing is undeniable.
