Hangin' with Alle Farben: It's Not a Solo Gig
For over a decade, DJ Alle Farben (39), has been dominating the music industry, both domestically and internationally. But earlier this year, he shared the news of a serious accident. During an interview with Spot on News, Alle Farben opens up about his upcoming plans and his hopes, both personally and professionally, after this challenging period.
A Decade of Success - Feels Bloody Good!
Alle Farben: To be honest, it feels freaking awesome! (laughs) I've been dabbling in music for 21 years - the past 11 of which have been a massive success. I'm stoked every year to get booking requests, play at massive festivals, make tunes with big-name artists - and it's amazing that it's sustained for so long. I'm freaking grateful for it, and it doesn't come for free. I work my ass off to stay on top of my game. Through my job, I've trotted the globe and checked out places I never planned to see. That's pretty frickin' cool.
Staying Grounded
Alle Farben: I've got a crew of great mates and awesome folks I work with who keep me from going all fluffy in my head. They give me a reality check if I start getting too pompous - but that doesn't happen much. I've had the same friends for years, and I'm bloody grateful for that. At the end of the day, I'm just a dude - I'm made of water too. It's important to remind yourself that you're not better than anyone else just because you're successful. Everyone carries their own burdens. My gig is just as regular as that of a pal who teaches primary school.
Evolution of the Sound
Alle Farben: Right now, I'm experiencing a resurgence of my own music. With my recent single “Flowers,” I'm returning to my roots - not just in sound, but also in working with the artist I collaborated with 11 years ago, Graham Candy. That's coming full circle, which was a heartfelt decision for me. We've been sharing the stage for 11 years. Just like my trumpeter Lahos, who's been touring with me for nine years. That's truly beautiful.
Personal Growth
Alle Farben: I've seen my ups and downs. At the start of my career, I was overwhelmed. No one tells you what it's like to perform on huge stages or to have random people recognize you on the street. That was intense, man. But now I'm living the dream. I use my career to do what I feel genuinely passionate about. It took me several years to figure that out, though.
Still Nervous? Hell Yeah!
Alle Farben: The excitement never leaves - and I've never found a good way to manage it. I know it's like that now, but I don't know how to deal with it. I try to eat something several hours before the show. I'm okay being excited, though. I also think it's cool that I'm still thrilled before the shows - because it still affects me.
When Things Don't Go Right
Alle Farben: I'm a bit of a perfectionist. That's stressful, but I've learned that I can't control every bloody thing. In those moments, you've got to be a professional. I've had a thousand bloopers on stage, but I smile and keep it going. I've got a solid team behind me. Alle Farben ain't just a one-man show, Alle Farben is teamwork.
Dealing with Criticism
Alle Farben: Criticism doesn't get under my skin much, but there was a time when I wouldn't read the news. It showed the worst side of social media. I gradually started reading comments again, and I even replied to a few - but not all. I don't want to give a platform to internet trolls. But some news still affects me.
Sharing the Spotlight
Alle Farben: No way. Everyone gets a chance to shine on stage - and that's what makes my show enjoyable. I don't play solo sets - I make entertainment, I create music. And when Graham Candy hops on stage and the crowd goes wild, it makes my show even more rad and joyful for me.
Favorite Collaboration? Let's Say Graham Candy (laughs)
Off-Stage Happiness
Alle Farben: Besides music, it's cooking and sports - two major passions in my life. From my hobby of cooking, it's blossomed into something more: During the lockdown, I learned to cook properly. Now I've got a cooking channel that's doing pretty well.
The Chef Dream? Maybe
Alle Farben: I've messed around in a bakery - I'm not that far from the kitchen. But it could've turned out differently too. I reckon I could've been happy in other areas - as a physiotherapist, a kindergarten teacher,...
Post-Accident Life
Alle Farben: My friends, family, and my team were massive helpers. It was heartwarming to see all the support from my closest circles and from the wider community. That helped me feel better.
Festival Season Approaches
Alle Farben: I think I've never been so ready for a festival season. I'll be back on stage for the first time after the accident, amongst smiling faces, and playing music. I'm pumped for the festival season more than ever - after this nasty accident and the uncertainty of whether I'd ever step foot on stage again. Now everything looks positive, and I'll be back to performing just as I did before.
Prepping for the Show
Alle Farben: I've got people who've got my back. My tour manager, for instance, always makes sure I stay hydrated. I focus on three things before a performance - you never know what might happen: I nap when I get the chance, I stuff my face when I get the chance, and I use the loo when I get the chance. That helps keep me in good nick.
Peace and Quiet, or Company? Nah
Alle Farben: I'm not a calm cat before a performance. I might become a bit quieter, but I'm not calm. There's something stirring inside me, the adrenaline starts flowing. It's a moment that energizes me.
Personal and Professional Wishes
Alle Farben: I'd simply love to play in Asia again. Before COVID, I was doing a lot of Asian dates. That's dropped due to the pandemic. I'm a huge fan of Asia - of the many countries, of the many cultures there. So I'd like to make some musical inroads there too. Personally, I don't expect much to change: I just want to live a good life, and I believe I'm on the right path if I keep doing what I'm doing.
