Mikes Mussallem recognized as the 2025 recipient of the Medtech Lifetime Achievement Award
In the realm of medical technology, the name Mike Mussallem is synonymous with innovation and dedication. Mussallem, who served as the CEO of Edwards Lifesciences from 2000 to 2023, has left an indelible mark on the industry. During his tenure, Edwards Lifesciences introduced breakthrough innovations worldwide, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a game-changer that has helped over one million patients worldwide and revolutionized the way patients with aortic stenosis receive treatment. Mussallem's contributions extend beyond Edwards Lifesciences. He co-founded the Linda and Mike Mussallem Foundation, which focuses on addressing complex health care challenges for overlooked populations. The Mussallems also established the Mussallem CHD Alliance, an initiative dedicated to saving and improving the lives of people born with congenital heart defects. Mussallem's leadership extends into advocacy as well. He served on the Medtech Association Board of Directors from 2004 to 2023, advocating for faster patient access to FDA-authorized medtech. He also urged legislators to add diagnostic tests to the Ensuring Patient Access to Critical Breakthrough Products Act, H.R. 5343, and asked the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts to rule that independent sales agent (ISA) arrangements do not violate the Anti-Kickback Statute (AKS). The Medtech Association's highest honour, the Lifetime Achievement Award, will be presented to Mussallem at The MedTech Conference. This award is reserved for pioneers in the medtech sector whose contributions have had a significant impact on patients' lives and the industry. The MedTech Conference, hosted by the Medtech Association, is open for registration. This event is a platform for industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers to discuss and shape the future of medical technology. Recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the details of the $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program. The Medtech Association, along with 67 stakeholder groups, is urging CMS to create a timely, streamlined pathway for Medicare patients to access FDA-authorized breakthrough medical technology. They also welcomed the bipartisan Reforming and Enhancing Sustainable Updates to Laboratory Testing Services (RESULTS) Act introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. The Medtech Association also urged the CMS to fix 'serious flaws' in its proposed rule to restart competitive bidding for durable medical equipment in Medicare. They are advocating for a more patient-centric approach to ensure that patients have access to the medical technology they need. Thousands of K-12 students returning to school this fall will face a cell phone use ban during instructional hours, but diabetes monitoring deserves an exception. The Medtech Association, along with other stakeholders, is advocating for policies that ensure diabetes patients can continue to monitor their health effectively in school. Mussallem's retirement in 2023 marks the end of an era, but his impact on the medtech industry will continue to be felt for years to come. His dedication to improving patients' lives and advocating for faster access to life-saving technology has set a high standard for future leaders in the industry.
