Metro service in Bengaluru accomplishes inaugural organ transportation
In a groundbreaking development, Bangalore's Namma Metro, operated by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), facilitated the transport of a donated human liver for transplant on August 1, 2025. This marks a significant milestone in Bangalore's organ transplant logistics [1][2][3][4][5].
The journey began at Vydehi Hospital, where the liver was carefully prepared for transport. The medical team, consisting of a doctor and seven medical staff, took charge of the liver and made their way to Whitefield Metro Station. Upon arrival, the liver was received by an Assistant Security Officer (ASO) and Metro personnel.
The transfer of the liver from Whitefield Metro Station to Rajarajeshwarinagar Metro Station was seamless, thanks to the coordination by the BMRCL. The liver was transported on a train that departed Whitefield metro station at 8.42 pm and arrived at Rajarajeshwarinagar Metro Station at 9.48 pm. Upon arrival, another ASO and Metro staff received the medical team.
This historic event follows the first instance of metro organ transportation, which occurred on January 18, 2025, in Hyderabad Metro Rail. The transport of the liver in Bangalore was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Joint Procedure Order (JPO) of the BMRCL.
The liver was safely delivered to Sparsh Hospital for a critical transplant, making this a landmark day in Bangalore's medical history. This is the second time in the country that a metro train is being used for organ transportation, signifying the growing potential of metro systems in facilitating urgent medical transports.
