In a recent address, Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken highlighted the importance of maintaining a stable medication supply, not only in Germany but also at the European level.

Minister Warken reassured the public that the supply of drugs is guaranteed, a sentiment she echoed in her proposed reform. This reform aims to increase the leeway for pharmacies, allowing them more flexibility in exchanging suitable available medications.

The reform does not repeat previous measures, such as the Anti-Shortage Law enacted in 2023 by the previous German federal government. This law, designed to address acute supply problems with children's medications, relaxed price rules to make drug deliveries to Germany more attractive for manufacturers and mandated several months' worth of stocks of frequently used drugs as a safety buffer.

Minister Warken acknowledged concerns about medication availability due to previous issues. To address these concerns, she suggested prompt measures can be taken in case of medication shortages. She also emphasized her commitment to a stable medication supply for fall and winter in 2023, although this guarantee was not repeated in the reform details.

Looking ahead, Minister Warken anticipates further EU regulations that could strengthen the production location in Europe, potentially further securing Germany's medication supply.

Despite the improvements shown in the situation regarding children's medications compared to previous years, Minister Warken's reform does not repeat this fact explicitly. However, it is clear that her focus remains on ensuring a secure and flexible medication supply for all Germans.
