Maryamu Idris, a seasoned oil and gas industry professional, has been appointed as Nigeria's National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). This significant appointment positions her at the intersection of domestic oil management and international energy policy.

Idris's career in the oil and gas industry spans over two decades. She began her journey in 1999 as an Enterprise Officer at the Bureau of Public Enterprises. Her meteoric rise through the ranks culminated in her appointment as Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited in April 2025. Prior to this, she served as Executive Director of Crude and Condensate at NNPC Trading Limited from 2022 to 2024, and Executive Director of Planning and Commercial from 2024 to 2025.

In her new role, Idris will represent Nigeria in various energy-related discussions at the international level. She will be a member of OPEC's Economic Commission Board (ECB), contributing to technical deliberations and policy recommendations within the board. Idris will also serve as the country's principal technical liaison within OPEC.

Idris's responsibilities as Nigeria's National Representative to OPEC include close coordination with the OPEC Governor and national stakeholders. She will work closely with NNPC Limited, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to ensure that Nigeria's energy interests are effectively represented and aligned with broader OPEC objectives.

Idris will play a key role in shaping both national and international energy strategies. As a member of the ECB, she will contribute to discussions on oil market analysis, economic studies, and long-term forecasting. Her input is expected to be instrumental in shaping OPEC's strategies in the ever-evolving global energy landscape.

NNPC, in a post on its Facebook page, congratulated Maryamu Idris on her appointment. The post highlighted her contributions to the oil sector, particularly her role in transparency initiatives while at the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative from 2006 to 2009.
