Young people in Halle (Saale) who are embarking on a new phase of life, whether starting an Ausbildung, studies, or a job, may find themselves faced with questions about insurance. To help address these concerns, a Q&A session will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, from 10 am to 2 pm.

This free resource is provided by advisors from the consumer center and is not an advertisement for any specific insurance company or product. Essential insurance types for students, apprentices, and job starters in Germany include health insurance, liability insurance, disability insurance, and travel insurance.

Health Insurance (Krankenversicherung) is mandatory for all students and apprentices in Germany. Students under 30 enrolled full-time must have German public health insurance (statutory insurance), which costs about €120 monthly and covers doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, mental health, and preventive checkups. Those over 30, attending preparatory courses, or not eligible for public insurance must get recognized private health insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000 for the entire stay.

Liability Insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung) is highly recommended but not compulsory. It protects against financial claims arising from accidental damage you cause to third parties. Many students and apprentices take out personal liability insurance for peace of mind.

Disability Insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung) is optional but advisable, especially for job starters, as it provides income protection if you cannot work due to illness or accident.

Travel Insurance is important for international students or apprentices when traveling abroad. It can cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings. However, short-term travel health insurance is usually not sufficient for visa purposes.

Additional notes:

  • Students may be covered under family health insurance of parents or spouses if under 25 and fulfilling certain income and study requirements, but beyond this age or income limit, compulsory own health insurance applies.
  • Private health insurance generally requires upfront payment of medical costs, reimbursed later, unlike statutory insurance which bills doctors directly.

Young people in Halle (Saale) who may need additional guidance on insurance options for their new phase of life are encouraged to attend the Q&A session on the market square. This one-day event offers an opportunity for young people to ask questions about private health insurance, private liability insurance, disability insurance, and travel insurance and to get answers from expert advisors from the consumer center.
