Man receives unexpected health revelation during regular medical check-up in Lübeck

In a remarkable turn of events, Hinrich Hinnah, a family man from Lübbecke, received a shocking diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2024, despite feeling healthy and having no symptoms. This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of regular preventive examinations.

Hinrich's story is a testament to the advancements in medical technology, as he underwent surgery with the DaVinci surgical system at the Minden University Hospital. This state-of-the-art system, now the standard in urology, has been in use at the hospital since late 2024.

The DaVinci surgical system offers precision in every tiny maneuver during surgery, thanks to a high-resolution 3D camera that provides an enlarged image of the operating field. The operator controls the system from a console, not the robot itself, allowing for millimeter-accurate operations, leading to smaller incisions, less blood loss, and faster recovery.

For Hinrich, the surgery was a success, and he recovered well. The DaVinci system is particularly useful in urology, as it allows for the precise removal of the prostate and preservation of important nerves for continence and potency.

Prostate cancer often causes no symptoms in its early stages, making early detection crucial. Around 60,000 men receive a prostate cancer diagnosis in Germany each year, and preventive examinations are recommended annually from the age of 45, and earlier for men with a family history.

The greatest risk factor for the occurrence of prostate cancer is age, with the average age of onset being 71 years. Unfortunately, many men die from prostate cancer in Germany each year, with about 12,000 to 14,000 deaths annually. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men worldwide.

If prostate cancer is within the prostate, the prognosis is good, and the cancer is usually curable. However, if the disease cannot be stopped despite treatment, there is a risk that the malignant tumor will spread to neighboring tissue and develop metastases.

The Minden University Hospital has performed over 200 operations in urology, gynecology, and general surgery with robotic assistance. The DaVinci surgical system is a beacon of hope for many patients, offering a chance at a better life, as it did for Hinrich Hinnah.
