Mainz Lifts Environmental Zone After Air Quality Improves
Mainz has lifted its environmental zone, first introduced in 2013, as of October 1st. The city attributes this move to significantly reduced pollutant values, now below legal limits. Drivers no longer need an environmental sticker to enter the city.
The environmental zone was implemented to tackle health-damaging pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and fine dust from road traffic. Over the years, the city has seen a decrease in vehicles with high emissions, leading to improved air quality. As a result, the corresponding signs for the environmental zone have been removed. Annette Steinkrüger, the Traffic Department Head, officially lifted the zone on October 1, 2025.
With the environmental zone lifted, drivers heading to Mainz no longer need an environmental sticker. The city's efforts to reduce pollutants have paid off, with values now below legal limits.
