Law enforcement closes down beauty parlor
In a recent development, the Health Regulatory Authority (ERS) and the Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) in Portugal have taken action against several beauty establishments in the municipalities of Cascais and Lisbon. The authorities found serious noncompliance with regulations regarding the reprocessing of multiple-use medical devices and the management of hospital waste [1].
The ERS has suspended the activities of these establishments due to the unqualified provision of healthcare services. This includes the application of botulinum toxin, injectable hyaluronic acid, biostimulants, anaesthetic medications, and tension threads/PDO, as well as minor surgical procedures such as bichectomy, blepharoplasty, and chin and neck liposuction, which are only permitted to be performed by qualified physicians [1].
The ERS did not disclose the number of establishments that were suspended or found to be in noncompliance with the mentioned regulations. Similarly, no information was provided about the consequences for the unqualified professionals involved or the establishments themselves. However, the case has been reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office [1].
The ERS stated that the precautionary measure will only be declared extinct when the elimination of the risk to the health and safety of users is proven. The authorities emphasised the importance of protecting human health and the environment, principles that were not ensured in the inspections [1].
The inspections were conducted jointly by the ERS and ASAE, highlighting the collaboration between the two authorities in maintaining the safety and quality of healthcare services in Portugal. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to legal requirements and regulations in the beauty industry [1].

- While the current focus is on ensuring compliance in the healthcare sector, it's also crucial to observe regulations in therapies-and-treatments and skin-care sectors to maintain a standard of safety and wellness for the public.
- To ensure holistic wellbeing, it's imperative for both authorities and individuals to uphold principles of health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, and skin-care within their respective domains, adhering to legal requirements, therapies-and-treatments guidelines, and maintaining a clean environment for all medical-conditions management.
