Influencing cooperative actions: The impact of oxytocin on teamwork and mutual assistance
Oxytocin, often dubbed the "cuddle hormone," is a fundamental regulator of social and sexual interactions. Primarily associated with romantic and maternal bonding, scientists are now exploring its influence on team collaboration.
Researchers Jennifer McClung, Zegni Triki, and their colleagues from the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland have pondered our unique capacity for teamwork and the factors shaping this ability. Specifically, they focused on the impact of our natural oxytocin levels on cooperation decisions and conversations with teammates.
In an intriguing study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, McClung and her team examined how oxytocin affects cooperation and conversation between people. They carried out an egg hunt experiment allowing them to observe exploration and cooperation patterns, as well as the dialogue between participants.
In the experiment, participants were paired and tasked with hunting for eggs filled with either red or blue-colored screws. Each player was offered a reward, either for collecting all the red screws or all the blue screws. Additionally, participants were randomly assigned to either the "apple" or "orange" groups. Potential group affiliation may foster team allegiance between members of the same group.
While hunting, players decided whether to cooperate with their partners or pursue their own objectives independently. To understand the influence of oxytocin, the researchers measured participants' natural oxytocin levels in saliva samples.
The researchers found that individuals with higher oxytocin levels were more likely to volunteer for spontaneous cooperation. Notably, this heightened cooperation only occurred between those assigned to the same group. According to McClung, participants from different groups would still operate solo even with high oxytocin levels and no sense of allegiance.
In situations of cooperation, participants with high oxytocin levels conversed less about their personal goals with teammates from the same group. Their discussions revolved more around their partner's objectives, although without offering direct assistance or joining pursuits. Conversely, those from different groups, regardless of oxytocin levels, still discussed personal goals more extensively.
Overall, these findings suggest that oxytocin helps strengthen social cues to support socially acceptable behavior, particularly between individuals sharing the same affiliation. Oxytocin may promote emotional connection and empathy among teammates, leading to more effective communication and understanding. However, it's essential to consider that oxytocin's effects can be influenced by individual characteristics, such as attachment style.
In team settings, oxytocin could have practical implications, intriguingly displayed in group activities that foster social bonding, such as group singing. This interaction could potentially foster a sense of community and cooperation among participants.
