Imprisoned political figure Nikita Emelianov faces potential vision loss
In a concerning development, reports from the human rights organisation 'Viasna' have highlighted the deteriorating health condition of 25-year-old political prisoner, Nikita Yemelyanov. Yemelyanov was sentenced to 6 years in prison by the Moscow District Military Court in 2020, initially facing 7 years but reduced to 4 years on appeal. He was initially detained in the fall of 2019.
Yemelyanov was sentenced under articles on 'intentional damage to property' (Article 218 of the Criminal Code), 'vandalism' (Article 341 of the Criminal Code), and 'illegal actions regarding weapons and explosives' (Article 295 of the Criminal Code). He has also faced additional penalties, with an additional 2 years added to his prison sentence under Article 411 of the Criminal Code for persistent disobedience to the administration of the colony.
The reports suggest that Yemelyanov is at risk of losing his sight in detention. This risk is thought to be a result of the denial of medical care in prison, a practice that has continued for the past two years. The denial of access to medical parcels includes necessary medications, vitamins, and other essential items.
Yemelyanov has been placed under the prison regime twice due to his health issues. Despite this, the denial of medical care persists, with the reports indicating that this denial is contributing to his health issues.
The situation of Nikita Yemelyanov is a cause for concern, with his health deteriorating due to the denial of medical care in prison. The reports call for immediate action to ensure Yemelyanov receives the medical attention he needs.
