Icy Coolers: Mass Recall of Over a Million Units Due to Risk of Finger Injuries - Key Information Unveiled

The popular cooler brand, Igloo, has announced a massive recall of its 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers due to a serious design flaw in the tow handle. The handle can pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, creating a pinch point hazard that has caused fingertip amputations, crushing injuries, bone fractures, and lacerations.

Details of the Design Flaw

The tow handle design creates a pinch point that traps and injures fingers when being extended or retracted. At least a dozen consumers have reported injuries, including fingertip amputations and severe crushing injuries. The recall states that the handle can pinch fingertips "against the cooler," meaning the gap between the handle and cooler body is a hazardous pinch zone.

Affected Models and Scope

The recall covers about 1.06 million coolers sold in the United States from January 2019 through January 2025. Additional recalled units include 47,000 coolers sold in Canada and 23,000 in Mexico. An expanded recall announced in May 2025 added approximately 130,000 more units in the U.S., plus thousands more in Canada and Mexico, totaling nearly 1.2 million units recalled.

The recalled coolers have a tow handle and the word "IGLOO" is printed on the side. They were sold in multiple color combinations, and the model number is located on labels affixed to the bottom of the cooler.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the affected coolers. Igloo is offering a free replacement handle to remove the hazard. To get a replacement or more information, consumers can contact Igloo toll-free or visit their recall information webpage.

Retailers

The recalled coolers were sold at major stores including Costco, Target, Academy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart, and online via Amazon and Igloo’s website.

Alternative Option

For those seeking a new cooler, the Igloo Max Cold Glide 110qt Cooler is an alternative option. It is designed for camping and is currently reduced to $110 on Amazon. The Igloo Max Cold Glide 110qt Cooler has a different handle design compared to the recalled coolers and is not part of the recall. The manufacturing date can be checked by looking at the bottom of the cooler where it is imprinted in a circular pattern with an arrow pointing to the month of manufacture and the last two digits of the year imprinted inside the circle.
