Heatwave Survival Strategies Provided by Neuss City Authorities

In the sweltering summer months, it's essential to take precautions to maintain good health and avoid heat-related problems. Here are some tips from health authorities and organizations in Germany, including the Deutscher Wetterdienst, the Berlin Senate Department for Science, Health and Care, the Medical Association of Berlin, and the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG).

Firstly, it's crucial to stay hydrated. The optimal drinking temperature is just below room temperature, and it's recommended to drink two to three liters of mineral water or calorie-free/low-calorie drinks like unsweetened fruit teas daily. Dairy products with low fat content and water-rich fruits and vegetables, such as melons, apples, peaches, bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, or crisp vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, or spinach, are suitable for hydration.

Avoiding alcohol and caffeine is also advised, as they cause additional fluid loss. Instead, opt for water or hydrating drinks.

Wearing the right clothing can help keep you cool. Light, loosely fitting clothing and breathable fabrics like linen prevent overheating and transport skin moisture to the outside. A hat, possibly with neck protection, is also advised to shield yourself from the sun.

When temperatures exceed 95°F (35°C), it's recommended to move less during the day. It's best to stay in the shade as much as possible. If you must be out in the sun, use sunscreen with a high SPF to avoid sunburn or heatstroke.

Unusual heat can lead to excessive sweating, lethargy, and circulatory weakness in the body. If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headache, ear ringing, neck pain, drowsiness, and confusion, immediately find a shady spot, rest, and hydrate. If initial measures don't help, seek medical attention.

Periodically cooling down is important to avoid heat-related problems. Small cool-downs with cool water (hand palms, forehead, neck) are recommended.

It's also essential to manage your living and working spaces. Ventilate them during the cool morning hours. After about 9 am, it's recommended to keep windows closed to keep the warm air out. Between 10 am and 3 pm, UV radiation is very intense, so it's best to stay indoors if possible.

Physical activities can be shifted to cooler morning and evening hours. Remember, when temperatures soar, it's all about staying cool, hydrated, and safe.
