Healthcare Workers to Convene and Determine Termination of Nationwide Work Stoppage
Amidst conflicting reports, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has clarified that the ongoing strike, which began on July 29, 2025, is still in effect. The strike, initiated to push for various demands such as an upward review of shift allowance, adjustment of uniform allowance, a separate salary structure for nurses, and mass recruitment of nurses, among others, is yet to be suspended.
Despite the Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Pate, announcing the suspension of the strike after a meeting with NANNM executives, the union leaders have maintained that the strike remains in place. The union leader, who did not disclose who initiated the strike initially, emphasised that the person with the authority to call off the strike has not done so.
The union leader added that the person who called the strike in the first place is the one who has the right to call it off. This statement suggests that the decision to suspend the strike will be made by the same individual or body that initiated it.
The union's National Executive Council (NEC) is scheduled to meet today (Saturday) to review the Federal Government's promises and determine the next line of action. The NEC meeting, which was announced by Omomo Tibiebi, the National Public Relations Officer of NANNM-FHI, will be crucial in deciding whether the strike will be suspended or continue.
The federal government had announced that the strike had been called off, but this was denied by the union. It is important to note that the strike remains ongoing as of Friday, according to Omomo Tibiebi.
The federal government had promised to address the nurses' demands during the NEC meeting today (Saturday). However, the union leader did not provide any details about these promises, stating that they would know if the Federal Government's promises are good enough to suspend the strike during the NEC meeting.
In a previous development, the Minister of Health had a meeting with NANNM executives on Friday. The details of this meeting are yet to be disclosed, but it is expected that the outcome of the meeting will be discussed during the NEC meeting.
The National Executive Council meeting will be a crucial step in resolving the ongoing strike and addressing the nurses' demands. The decision about whether to suspend the strike will be made during this meeting, providing clarity on the future of the strike.
