Haribo Issues Recall of "Happy Cola" in Netherlands Due to Cannabis Contamination

Haribo is withdrawing Happy Cola due to contamination with cannabis.

In the Netherlands, Haribo has recalled its "Happy Cola F!ZZ" sweets amidst reports of cannabis traces found in some packages, causing health issues in consumers, including children.

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has initiated a full recall, explaining that the suspect sweets could cause health complaints such as dizziness. Traces of cannabis were discovered in the suspect cola-flavored bottles. The BBDO, a Dutch family who reported feeling unwell after consumption, initially prompted a police investigation.

Forensic analysis revealed the presence of cannabis in three bags of the "Happy Cola F!ZZ" sweets, leading to the recall of the entire stock. The affected product is a 1kg bag with the production code L341-4002307906 and a best before date of January 2026.

"The safety of our consumers is our top priority," said Patrick Tax, marketing vice-president at Haribo, as the company now collaborates with authorities to investigate the source of the contamination. The NVWA, in consultation with Haribo, has issued a safety warning advising consumers not to eat the affected sweets.

"After consultation with the NVWA and as is customary in such situations, Haribo has issued a safety warning," the spokesperson noted. The company also stressed that this incident only affects "a limited number of cases."

The "Happy Cola" products, a classic in the Haribo range for decades, are now under investigation to determine how cannabis managed to contaminate the sweets. Police are probing the matter, aiming to ascertain the origin of the cannabis in the affected candies.
