Hannover Pioneers New Cardiac Arrest Treatment with High Performance CPR
Hannover is pioneering a new approach to cardiac arrest treatment, launching a pilot trial of High Performance CPR (HP-CPR) on September 1, 2025. This collaborative effort involves the city's fire department, emergency doctors, and aid organizations like the German Red Cross, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe, and Malteser Hilfsdienst. The aim? To significantly improve resuscitation outcomes and neurological recovery.
HP-CPR is a scientifically proven concept, backed by Dr. Axel von der Ohe, First Mayor and Councilor for Finance, Order, and Fire. It sets new standards in emergency care by enhancing resuscitation quality and gaining crucial time. The process begins with immediate resuscitation by bystanders, followed by clear collaboration among emergency services. Each responder has a precisely defined role, ensuring almost continuous chest compressions and integration of vital medical measures.
The implementation in Hannover has been meticulously prepared through intensive training, simulation exercises, and the use of modern resuscitation technology. Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Flemming, Medical Director of the Emergency Medical Services, expects this rigorous preparation to ensure everyone knows their steps and order. In corresponding incidents, an emergency doctor vehicle, an ambulance, and a fire engine staffed with four firefighters are dispatched. Initial studies and practical experiences suggest HP-CPR can significantly boost chances of successful resuscitation and good neurological recovery.
The pilot trial of HP-CPR in Hannover is set to run for six months, with an initial evaluation planned for the end of this period. If successful, this innovative approach could revolutionize cardiac arrest treatment, saving more lives and improving patient outcomes.
