German Pig Farmer Scales Back Aquaponics Dream to Garden
Simon Donhauser, a pig farmer from Auersberg, Germany, has scaled back his aquaponics dream to his own garden. Initially planned for his farm, the project faced numerous hurdles, leading Donhauser to explore alternative strategies.
Donhauser first encountered aquaponics during his master's thesis. This innovative system combines fish farming and plant cultivation in a closed-loop, making efficient use of resources. Initially, he planned to set up an aquaponic facility on his farm for diversification. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and economic uncertainty made him consider giving up pig farming altogether.
Innovation, Donhauser believes, requires courage and perseverance, even when faced with detours. He decided to put the aquaponic plan on hold due to challenges like citizen participation, uncertainties, and lack of support from authorities. The planned facility also reached legal limits, requiring a lengthy permit process. Instead, Donhauser is now pursuing an alternative strategy of converting a sow stall into a modern AI center with outdoor access.
To continue his personal development and learn from others, Donhauser is investing in founder coaching and exchanging ideas with visionary farmers. He remains committed to innovation, now on a smaller scale in his garden.
Simon Donhauser's aquaponics dream may have been scaled back, but it's far from over. Despite facing challenges, he remains committed to innovation, now focusing on personal development and alternative strategies for his pig farm in Auersberg.
